Walking Down Memory Lane

Traveling every Sunday to Rustic Lodge in Luna Pier for Polka music was a group of friends. Questions were asked why we didn't have Polka music at any clubs on Sunday afternoon closer to home, that we had to travel so far. It was decided to start a Polka club.

The first organizing meeting was held in July 1967 at the home of Mack Pilat. In attendance were Founders - Tony Turczyn, Mack Pilat, Wally Webber, Ed Wolanin, Steve Cichon, and Paul Drabczyk. Also in attendance were Betty Skowronski, Ida Masiarczyk, Delphine Hill, Ann Susac and Anita Pawlowski. Applications were printed and dues set at $2.00 per year or S10.00 for 5 years which made you a Charter Member. Originally only charter members were able to run for office. Then they decided against this. The name "Polka Booster Club of America" was approved along with the dues format.

First meeting was held at the Sip & Chat Lounge in Detroit. Second meeting was held at Tip Top Lounge on Proctor. Afterwards all meetings were held at Sgt. Madaj Post for approximately five years. Meetings were then moved to the Dearborn Civic Center. After this our meetings were held at Sokol Cultural Center. Presently our meetings are held the first Wednesday of the month at the Monsignor Hunt K of C Hall in Dearborn Heights, MI.

First officers were: President - A1 Jay; Vice President - Kenny Pytlak; Treasurer - Gerda Galen; Recording Secretary - Betty Shaw; Corresponding Secretary - Ida Masiarczyk (Wegrzyn); Sgt. at Arms - Sylvester Peplinski; Registered Agent - Mack Pilat; Entertainment Chairman - Tom Zacharias. There was a welcome dance that was held at a Veterans Hall on Maple Road in Dearborn.

The first regular Polka dance was held at the Monsignor Hunt K of C Hall with music by the Marion Lush Orchestra from Chicago. The following schedule was approved and still in use: Inaugural Ball in January, Anniversary Dinner Dance in September and Christmas Party in December.  Our first picnic was held at the Greenlawn Grove picnic grounds.
With the election of Florence Kateu as President in 1984, membership increased to over 400.

At the present our current membership exceeds 490. Dues at present time are $10.00 per year. All Charter members that are active are now Life Members and pay no dues. Present Registered Agent is Dolores Cebula, Southgate, MI.
